how it works
How do AI visibility tools work
An AI visibility tool builds a list of the questions your buyers ask, sends those questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, records whether your brand is named and which URLs are cited, then compares the pages the engine did cite against yours so you know what to publish.
Rankfastt runs that loop every 3 days across five surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. What follows is the mechanism, step by step.
How do AI visibility tools work?
They send your buyers' questions to each engine on a repeating schedule and record what comes back. The model itself is untouched. What changes is your measurement: you stop guessing whether you appear and start counting how often.
The five steps
1.Prompt set built from your category and competitors
The list starts from what you sell and who you sell against. Rankfastt tracks 30 prompts per brand and sorts each one into one of three types: buying (names a category or a problem), brand (contains your own name), competitor (names a rival and not you). The split matters because the three behave nothing alike.
2.Scheduled runs against each engine
Each prompt goes to all five surfaces every 3 days. A page you publish today is not re-crawled and re-cited by tomorrow, so a daily check mostly reports crawl lag as movement.
3.Mention and position detection
Each answer is read for your brand, for the rivals on your list, and for where each one lands. Being named in the opening line is a different result from a closing aside.
4.Citation source extraction
Engines that show their sources hand back URLs. Rankfastt records the domain and the exact URL behind each answer, which turns "we are losing" into "this page is winning instead of ours."
5.Fix list mapped to your pages
Each gap becomes an edit on a named URL of yours, not general advice.
How does an AI visibility tool help improve website citations?
By naming the page the engine used instead of yours. A citation is a URL, so once you have the one the engine picked, the difference between that page and yours is a list of edits rather than a theory.
Rankfastt reports four fixes:
A self-contained answer paragraph at the top of the page
An engine quotes a passage, not a page. A paragraph that answers the question without needing the two above it is one the engine can lift whole.
Schema that matches the page type
JSON-LD states your facts in a field instead of leaving them to be inferred from your layout. It adds no authority. It removes ambiguity.
An llms.txt file
A markdown file at your domain root naming what your site is and which pages hold the answers. No engine has committed to reading it, so treat it as cheap insurance, not a ranking input.
Crawler access for GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended
Blocked in robots.txt, you cannot be cited at any quality of content. Google-Extended governs Gemini and AI Overviews and carries no ranking signal, so blocking it costs citations and changes nothing in classic search.
Shipping a fix does not move the number the same week. Perplexity picks changes up within days. ChatGPT follows Bing, and Google AI Overviews and AI Mode follow Google, which usually takes one to three weeks.
A worked example
[TODO: the worked example, from one real account, anonymised. Fill in as: prompt PROMPT checked on DATE, ChatGPT named BRANDS instead, citing URLS. Fix FIX shipped DATE. At the next check on DATE the citation rate on that prompt was RATE. Two dates and two numbers is the whole value of this section.]
What makes an AI tool effective in improving search visibility?
Two things. It has to separate the questions that matter from the ones that flatter you, and it has to survive engines that answer the same question differently each time you ask.
Most headline numbers fail the first test. "Rankfastt vs Surfer" hands the engine your name inside the question, so finding you in the reply proves close to nothing. "Best SEO tools" is the moment a buyer picks a product without knowing you exist. Averaged together, a 0% on the second hides behind a 33% on the first and you are told 7%, a number nobody can act on. Rankfastt scores the three prompt types separately and leads with the buying segment.
Two rates are reported for each segment:
- Coverage is cited prompts divided by checked prompts. It tells you how much of the demand you touch at all.
- Answer share is cited answers divided by total answers, counted one prompt on one engine at a time. It tells you how reliably you hold a question asked repeatedly.
Failed engine calls are excluded from both. An engine returning HTTP 429 has not said you are absent, and scoring a rate limit as a missing citation drags the number down for a reason unrelated to your site.
Do these tools change the AI model?
No. They change what the model can find and quote about you. The weights are fixed and nothing you publish edits them. What you control is the material the engine retrieves at answer time and the pages it has already indexed.
Is an AI visibility tool the same as a rank tracker?
No. A rank tracker records your position in a list of blue links. An AI visibility tool records whether you are named inside a written answer and which URLs that answer cites, on a question phrased differently every time it is asked.
Why does the same prompt give a different answer each time?
Because the engines are not deterministic and the sources they retrieve change between runs. This is why one check is a sample rather than a measurement, and why Rankfastt reports a rate across repeated runs instead of a yes or no from one answer.
Which engines does Rankfastt check?
Five surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Every tracked prompt is sent to all five every 3 days.
See it run on your own domain
The AI Visibility Checker runs one prompt against the engines once, free. Rankfastt runs your whole prompt set on a schedule and drafts the fixes.
